“I’m all about Story.”

1997 – Present

Freelance Writer/ Independent Editor & Story Consultant

(Fiction, Non-fiction & Screenplays)

Sends Flowers After Killing Darlings

I began working as a writer in 1984. I started critiquing and editing fiction and nonfiction manuscripts in 1997, starting with: Alchemy of Sacred Living: Creating a Culture of Light by E.J. Michael, author of Queen of the Sun, a new age adventure story (Mountain Rose Publishing). Then I was hired to ghostwrite Grasshopping Through Time…Using Ancient Wisdom” by Rex Lassalle, (Holistic Press), a nonfiction, instructional book.

Since then, I’ve edited over 50 books, both fiction and nonfiction, worked on over 40 screenplays, written multiple short stories (some posted here), developed promotional materials for both novelists and filmmakers, written a feature-length, post-apocalyptic screenplay based on environmental science, and collaborated with a few screenwriters on several others.

With Willamette Writers (the oldest and largest writer’s group in the U.S.), I sat on the steering committee in 2004 as the Marketing Director for the annual writer’s conference, during which I produced the conference website, all the ads (plus made the media buys), and created all the materials used within the conference. It was 400 hours of work, but the conference was a huge success.

2004 Willamette Writer’s Kay Snow AwardJudge/Adult Fiction (accurately identified the top three winners).

2011 Austin Film Festival: First round Reader/Judge. Judged over 100 screenplays and wrote coverage notes on 70.

2005 Managing Editor & Publisher – Natural Awakenings Magazine (Austin, TX Edition)

Published a monthly, franchise magazine on health and wellness (16,000 copies distributed through 250 locations). Managed staff of 8, recruited freelance material, oversaw layout through distribution, managed sales staff, promoted local awareness of magazine through event sponsorship and presence.  Published six issues before the owner closed the magazine.

1996- Present   Freelance Copywriter/PR & Strategic Marketing Consultant

Radio and TV production. Silver Microphone award. Website content and design. I keep my hand in this on occasion.

1992 – 1996 – Artist/Freelance Copywriter & Producer

I told stories with beads. My efforts culminated with a one woman, two week-long, guest artist show at the world famous Di Grazia Gallery in the Sun, in Tucson Arizona. I also wrote and produced radio spots during this time, as well as some damn effective PR for some of the juried art shows and galleries where I showed my work.

1984 – 1991 Copywriter

I worked in advertising agencies in Chicago, Boston and Austin, TX. Also worked on staff and on a freelance basis at regional agencies creating market strategies & positioning statements (tag lines), plus writing all manner of corporate communications including print, outdoor, radio, TV, brochures and PR. New business concept and pitches, talent casting, radio and TV production.
